D'Alessandro and his co-workers reported on the separation of four different fractions from the Reiter strain of Treponema pallidum (1, 2, 3). This report deals with the thermolabile soluble protein extract of the Reiter treponeme. The antigen employed in this study was prepared by de Bruijn (4) using the technic described by D'Alessandro. The antigen is prepared briefly as follows: The Reiter treponemes are grown in a Brewer thioglycollate medium. After harvesting the washing, the treponemes are subjected to cryolysis. ABO blood groups and Australia antigen

The distribution of ABO blood in two groups of people with Australia antigen was studied (121 blood donors and 128 patients) and in 3,091 controls was investigated. There was a significant excess of A in comparison with o when the two groups were combined, and when the two groups were tested for (A + B): (AB +O) individually and together, both were found to be statistically significant. In summary the lectin-like protein analogous to bovine conglutinin was purified from human serum. Using a lectin-based ELISA system, it was demonstrated that conglutinin-like protein binds to human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV1) glycoprotein 120 (gp 120) via its carbohydrate binding site. In vitro experiments with T-lymphoblastoid CEM cells revealed that conglutinin-like protein abolishes infection by HIV1; a 50 % cytoprotective concentration of 23.9 μg/ml was measured.
